This entry examines the physical and statistical spectral analysis of multispectral imagery, with an emphasis on terrestrial, multispectral, remote sensing imagery. Spectral properties of thermal and nonthermal sources, including the sun, are summarized, along with the spectral signatures for solids, liquids, and gases. Algorithms for specific physical retrievals are discussed. Physical retrievals are illustrated using imagery from the MTI. Common spectral statistical analysis methods are summarized and illustrated with examples from an AVIRIS hyperspectral image.
