Abstract and subjects
The Materials Test Station (MTS) is a proposed accelerator target to be built at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). The purpose of this target is to provide a high-intensity neutron irradiation environment that is sufficient similar to that of fast reactors to enable testing of new fast reactor fuels. Presently, there are no intense sources of fast neutrons in the United States and the number facilities where such irradiations can be performed worldwide is quite limited. The MTS would provide an environment where fast reactor fuels tests could be performed under controlled conditions to asses the effects of burnup, cladding damage and fission product buildup.
